Brooklyn Construction Worker Injured After Falling Through Roof

A Brooklyn construction worker suffered serious injuries after falling through the ceiling of a Bensonhurst school in early July, according to a recent article by ABC7NY. The accident occurred at JHS 227 on 16th Avenue in Bensonhurst on the morning of July 5th.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel arrived after reports of a roof collapse, only to discover the construction worker, who had fallen through.

Violations issued by the Department of Buildings

The construction worker was rushed to nearby Maimonides Medical Center with serious, although non-life-threatening, injuries.

Inspectors from the city’s Department of Buildings later determined that the workers were using heavy machinery on the school’s roof when a 10x10 foot section collapsed onto a fourth-floor classroom. The contractor, Civil Contracting Corp., was issued a violation for failing to safeguard the work site and for working outside of approved plans. In addition, a partial vacate order was issued for the classroom and the portion of the roof where the collapse occurred.

An addition to New York’s growing list of serious construction accidents and injuries

The city has been faced with all too frequent injuries to its construction workers, as companies and contractors fail to provide and adhere to safe working conditions. In these situations, not only is the worker seriously injured—and sometimes even killed—but their families are left with costs, bills, and emotional trauma for a preventable event.

An experienced and knowledgeable construction accident attorney can step in and work with both injured parties and their families to help them determine the appropriate course of action, including placing them in a position to obtain all the financial benefits they are entitled to under the law. Any delay in contacting an attorney can severely prejudice a claim.
