Is it safe to operate construction cranes in winter weather?

A deadly crane collapse in lower Manhattan in February 2016 raised serious concern about weather, cranes and public safety, adding to existing worries about construction worker safety in the city. According to an NBC New York report, a 37-mile gust of wind was noted near the TriBeCa accident site just minutes before the horrific accident that killed a 38-year-old man who was on his way to work.

Preventing winter construction injuries with basic safety rules

New York construction workers know that their jobs can be even more dangerous in winter. But many accidents can be avoided if builders and contractors put safety first and make sure fundamental winter safety rules are always followed on their job sites.

Winter brings additional hazards for construction workers

With New York City's construction boom continuing to change the urban landscape and keep developers in the black, dozens of workers died on the job in 2017. While many construction accidents occur in warmer weather when more workers are outside, winter brings its own set of hazards, not just in the five boroughs. One deadly fall occurred in nearby Philadelphia in late November while another worker was killed north of Pittsburgh while raising traffic poles in late December.
