New York road construction work starting to slow

It happens every year: New York roadway construction picks up in the spring and slows down in fall. Though road work slows down at this time of year, the remaining job sites are just as dangerous as ever for workers and drivers alike.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration says that more than 400,000 people each year are injured in roadway construction zone accidents and more than 800 drivers, passengers and workers are killed in the crashes.

Safety tips for drivers
The Department of Transportation says that most of the fatal wrecks take place in summer and fall and that the majority of them happen on highways and roads where speed limits are above 50 mph. The federal agency issues some common-sense advice for drivers, including the following:

  • Don't pay attention to your phone or radio, pay attention to traffic, signs and workers
  • Merge into the proper lane before a lane closure
  • Don't tailgate
  • Obey the posted speed limit
  • Be patient and expect the unexpected: work vehicles or workers might enter traffic at any time
  • Watch brake lights on the vehicles ahead of you
  • "Listen" to the signs directing you to slow, merge, etc.
  • Remember at all times that workers might be just a few feet away from your vehicle

Construction workers in road work zones are vulnerable. They can sustain devastating injuries when drivers don't pay attention to conditions.
