Big development (and many worker injuries) in Long Island City

The iconic New York City skyline continues to stretch beyond its traditional Manhattan borders into Brooklyn and Queens. In Long Island City, the East River is becoming home to expensive condos and massive commercial developments, rapidly changing its image as a run-down 20th Century manufacturing hub.

The perennially industrial Long Island City coast is morphing into something quite fancy. Plans for a proposed $3 billion development in Long Island City feature a 70-story luxury tower, according to the New York Times. But development in the area has brought a series of construction accidents, with numerous workers hurt on the job.

Serious accidents in L.I.C.

Far too many construction workers are hurt and killed each year in New York City. For a sense of the problem as it relates specifically to Long Island City, consider two accidents that occurred within a few days of each other in L.I.C.:

  • A concrete-related floor collapse that injured six workers on a job near Queens Plaza South and 42nd Road. Reportedly, the city's department of buildings issued a stop-work order and a violation against the builder of the 18-story residential building.
  • Three workers who were crushed, with one buried under rubble for two hours, when a load of building materials dropped through a roof of a residential site, according to a New York Post report. A crane was used to place an excessive weight that the roof couldn't bear.

If you need legal advice about an injury

Each year, many construction workers are hurt on sites in Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and other parts of the city. If you or one of your family members was injured on a construction site, get the legal advice you need to make informed choices. You may be entitled to money damages through a third-party claim.
