Construction worker hit, killed by 30,000-pound concrete slab

Few things are as tragic and difficult for people to accept as the premature death of a loved one. The sudden and unexpected loss of a dear friend or a family member can shake us to the core.

Those were the emotions rolling through those who gathered recently for the funeral of a 49-year-old construction worker killed in an on-site accident. One of the mourners described the accident victim as an "authentically, genuinely, joyful, kind person."

"Anyone who met him says he was just so kind," said the mourner.

A horrific, tragic loss
The Texas construction worker was killed as he worked on a site in Austin. A 30,000-pound slab of pre-formed concrete fell on him, a TV news report stated. Frantic emergency crews tried to use sledge hammers, saws and other tools to break the slab apart, but they were unable to do so in time to save him. The news report said it took workers more than three hours to recover his body.

At his funeral, friends and family said they will always remember him for his kindness. His wife said at the service that her husband "always told our daughter ‘thank you for choosing me as a dad; thank you for choosing us as your parents.’"

She added, "And now I say to him thank you for choosing us to be your family."

Accountability and protection
No one can bring her husband back, of course. But those injured in construction accidents can help make the industry safer by fighting for maximum compensation for all damages. By doing so, you put financial pressure on New York City construction firms to make their sites and projects as safe as possible. Injured workers or their families should consult with an experienced personal injury attorney to protect their interests.
