The 4 most deadly hazards on construction sites

There’s no disputing it; being a construction worker is a dangerous job. Whether you are working with heavy machinery or high atop scaffolding, you are always one slip-up away from suffering a serious – and possibly life-threatening – injury.

In fact, according to the most recent data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an alarming 899 construction workers suffered fatal injuries in 2014 alone – accounting for more than one-fifth of all U.S. work-related deaths in the private sector that year.

Even more concerning about these construction worker deaths is that more than half are linked to just four construction site hazards. An analysis of the BLS data mentioned above, which was conducted by the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), found that more than 60 percent of the 899 construction fatalities were caused by:

  • Falls (359 deaths)
  • Electrocutions (74 deaths)
  • Struck/hit by objects (73 deaths)
  • Caught between/in accidents (39 deaths)

As noted by OSHA, 545 lives would be saved in a single year if just these four hazards were addressed and eliminated. Unfortunately, however, that seems unlikely as there will always be some careless construction workers – workers who put themselves and others at risk because of their negligent actions.
