Update on Tracy Morgan truck accident investigation

Here's an update to our previous post in which we wrote about the Tracy Morgan crash. The good news for fans of the native New York City comedian is that his medical condition has been upgraded from critical to fair. There's even more good news: the National Transportation Safety Board has joined the New Jersey State Police in the investigation of the truck accident.

The NTSB is taking a big-picture look at  "commercial truck safety (issues), such as vehicle maintenance, medical qualifications, drug and alcohol testing of drivers, driver fatigue, equipment and technology," said a spokesperson.

One issue concerning observers is that the Wal-Mart truck that slammed into Morgan’s limo was equipped with the latest truck safety electronic gear. The sophisticated electronics it carried did not prevent the truck from flipping the vehicle, killing one of Morgan’s companions and leaving the “30 Rock” comic with critical injuries.

It’s possible that the electronics’ warnings were useless in this instance because the trucker had not slept in 24 hours before the crash, according to officials. He has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Fatal accidents involving large trucks are on the rise, according to the most recent traffic data. Deaths in large-truck crashes topped 3,900 in 2012.

A spokesperson for the American Trucking Association said that with the economy picking up, truckers are driving more miles to deliver more goods. The increased trucking miles means an increase in accidents involving commercial vehicles, he said.

Because of the way our legal system is structured, families that lose a loved one and truck accident victims who suffer serious injuries are on their own as they seek justice and compensation for their losses. That’s what makes the choice of attorney such a crucial decision in the process.
