Worker dies in scaffolding accident at a Midtown hotel

A construction worker fell approximately 80 feet to his death at a Midtown hotel on April 2.  The accident occurred at approximately 2:10 p.m. when the worker fell from scaffolding at 210 West 55th Street close to Broadway.

The worker was using what was called a supported scaffold at the time the work-related accident took place.  According to the Department of Buildings, the worker had fallen through an area that was apparently unprotected due to the removal of planks.

There were a number of witnesses to this accident. One witness described the incident as “horrifying.” Renovation had been going on at this hotel for close to one year, but work has been halted due to the fatal accident.

The construction worker was eight floors up when the fall occurred and landed on scaffolding just above the entrance to the hotel. Many people had questioned whether adequate safety precautions were taken that may have prevented this accident from occurring. One individual mentioned often seeing workers performing tasks without harnesses.

Accidents involving scaffolds and ladders are unfortunately common in New York. The risks of working at heights are so obvious that it’s difficult to excuse any employer for not implementing precautions that would prevent falls from occurring. It’s clear that construction jobs can involve great risks in any case and employers should be taking every effort to make certain their workers are protected from injury.

When employers fail to take the proper precautions, they should be held accountable. Victims and their family members may wish to speak to an experienced construction accident attorney to determine what legal actions for recovery are available.
