NYC building collapse leaves eight workers injured

A recent construction accident in Brooklyn has raised questions about the safety of the construction site. Workers were in a building under demolition when they fell two stories. Eight workers were taken to the hospital.

Building demolition can be dangerous work. Buildings are often demolished because they are old or dilapidated or because they need to make way for new building projects. Demolishing a building requires particular safety measures and care to prevent serious accidents and fatalities. Even when an environment is controlled and safe, workers face dangers from debris or falling objects. A failure to take proper care can result in serious injuries and death.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) website,  a demolition contractor should plan the demolition of a building carefully to protect the safety of workers. A demolition contractor should consider:

  • How the structure will be brought down
  • What equipment will be necessary
  • What steps are needed to keep workers safe

OSHA says that planning a demolition is as important as the demolition itself.

Was this demolition properly planned? Were safety precautions in place? Were safety laws followed? Investigators will look for answers to these and other answers. Already, news reports indicate that a preliminary inspection by the city Buildings Department found that demolition work on the interior may have been done without permits.

Workers who are injured in accidents during the demolition of buildings may be able to hold negligent parties accountable for through a personal injury lawsuit for money damages. If you have been injured, an attorney with experience in construction accidents can assess whether you have a potential claim.
