Man struck by backhoe as NYC focuses on pedestrian accidents

New York City is dealing with an increased number of pedestrian accidents. In the first two weeks of 2014 alone, seven pedestrians were killed in the city, and one more pedestrian recently died after being struck by a backhoe in Brighton Beach.

The victim was a 73-year-old man who was struck around noon on Feb. 3. The backhoe, used for moving snow, was riding in reverse. Police say the victim crossed the street in the middle of the block. He was taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries. The driver of the backhoe, a 33-year-old man, remained at the scene.

Partly in response to rising pedestrian accidents, Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced new efforts to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents in New York. The “Vision Zero” initiative will focus on strategies to eliminate fatal accidents. Already, New York City is using traffic cameras to write more tickets and has more police officers focused on pedestrian safety.  The city may also expand the number of zones where the speed limit is 20 mph.

The steps may make New York streets safer for pedestrians. But the changes will not take away the responsibility of motorists to drive safely and watch out for pedestrians. When drivers are careless or negligent, injuries or death can be the result for pedestrians who are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
