Man crushed by garbage truck while crossing the street

Removing the trash from a city as large as New York requires a small army of sanitation trucks. These garbage trucks are generally extremely large, may be nearly full, and may have drivers on a tight schedule. The result is a danger for pedestrians, who can be seriously injured or in a collision with a sanitation truck. In one recent tragic accident, a man in his mid-20s died after being hit by a garbage truck. Police are investigating the accident.

The man, a rabbinical student in New Jersey, was visiting Brooklyn to celebrate his friend’s upcoming wedding. He was walking to a morning prayer service at the time of the accident. He was crossing Kingston Avenue at Carroll Street when a garbage truck hit him as it turned the corner. A witness said the man was hit by the truck’s tires. The man, originally from Ukraine, died at the scene.

The truck driver had a valid license and did not have a criminal background, according to news reports. He was not arrested or given any citations. The Department of Sanitation released a statement offering condolences to the man’s family and to the Crown Heights community after the accident. It pledged to work with the New York Police Department in the accident investigation.

The fatal accident is one of a string of fatal pedestrian accidents that came as the new mayor announces plans to reduce the number of pedestrian deaths in the city.  Mayor Bill de Blasion’s Vision Zero initiative is aimed at eliminating pedestrian fatalities over the next 10 years.

If you have been injured or lost a loved one in a pedestrian accident, an experienced personal injury attorney can evaluate whether you may have a claim for money damages for your medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other losses from the accident.
