Man crushed by garbage truck while crossing the street

Removing the trash from a city as large as New York requires a small army of sanitation trucks. These garbage trucks are generally extremely large, may be nearly full, and may have drivers on a tight schedule. The result is a danger for pedestrians, who can be seriously injured or in a collision with a sanitation truck. In one recent tragic accident, a man in his mid-20s died after being hit by a garbage truck. Police are investigating the accident.

Work accident trends in New York

Construction workers can be particularly affected by workplace accident trends. Construction sites, which can place workers high above the ground, the path of large machinery or many other hazards, are known for dangers. Because of this, a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report that showed a decrease in nonfatal injuries and accidents last year may be good news for construction workers.

Does lax truck safety oversight create danger on New York roads?

The New York State Comptroller says the state needs to do a better job of making sure that commercial trucks and drivers follow safety regulations. The comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli, recently released an audit that showed the state Department of Transportation frequently failed to monitor commercial trucks to ensure that serious violations were fixed before they returned to the roads.

Man struck by backhoe as NYC focuses on pedestrian accidents

New York City is dealing with an increased number of pedestrian accidents. In the first two weeks of 2014 alone, seven pedestrians were killed in the city, and one more pedestrian recently died after being struck by a backhoe in Brighton Beach.
