Two dead after separate pedestrian accidents on Upper West Side

A 9-year-old boy and a 73-year-old man are dead after separate motor vehicle accidents on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Police were investigating both pedestrian accidents, and it was unclear if either driver would face charges.

The boy was struck by a cab and killed just after he left his building with his father on the evening of Dec. 10, 2013. The boy and his father were crossing the street at the time of the accident. The father received a minor leg injury. According to news reports, occupants in a nearby SUV stopped and yelled at the cab driver to stop. The driver was waiting with his head in his jacket as he waited for police to arrive. The boy died at St. Luke's Hospital.

About 30 minutes earlier, a 73-year-old man was struck and killed by a tour bus. According to news reports, the driver may not have seen the man and kept driving. Witnesses flagged down the driver to stop the bus. The man, who had been dragged under the bus, was freed. A witness said the victim's face was scraped, his legs were scraped and his clothes were torn apart.

Both accident victims leave behind grieving loved ones and questions about how the accident happened and who should be held to blame. Were the drivers distracted or in a hurry? Were they properly trained and licensed? While police handle investigations for potential criminal charges, experienced personal injury attorneys understand how to investigate fatal accidents to assess whether the victim's family members may be able to seek money damages in a civil lawsuit.
