Woman killed when car crashes at accident-prone site

A ten-year veteran of the New York Police Department has died after a horrific car accident. The 36-year-old woman crashed when her car lost control on a ramp and crashed into a storefront, fueling speculation among bystanders that the road design has created a dangerous situation for drivers and pedestrians.

According to media reports, the woman was on her way home at about 2 a.m. when her vehicle struck a guard rail and a cement barrier on a bridge ramp off the 59th Street Bridge. Her car overturned and crashed into a storefront. According to the Department of Transportation, emergency workers had to cut through the vehicle to extricate the woman's body. Police accounts differed the day after the car accident, saying she was ejected from the vehicle.

The fatal accident is the third since 2011. In March of that year, a drunk driver coming off the exit ramp killed a pedestrian. A week and a half later, a woman lost control on the ramp and slammed into two storefronts. She died from her injuries. In addition to the fatal accidents, a taxi driver crashed into scaffolding on the exit after losing control.

Business owners and others in the area have blamed changes in the road design for the accidents. The owners of two businesses are suing the Department of Transportation, the city and others for about $1 million in damages after the first two crashes.

Many factors can lead to fatal motor vehicle accidents. In addition to factors such as speed, impairment, distraction and other common causes, unsafe or dangerous roads can also contribute to car accidents.
