Two killed in separate New York City pedestrian accidents

New York City streets are lively mix of cars, taxis, livery vehicles, bicycles and other vehicles. For pedestrians, walking on sidewalks and crossing the streets can be extremely dangerous. According to the New York City Department of Transportation, pedestrians are 10 times more likely to die in a crash than the occupant of a vehicle. Between 2005 and 2009, pedestrians made up more than half of traffic fatalities, department statistics show.

The dangers to pedestrians were abundantly clear one recent night when two pedestrians were struck and killed in separate accidents. The first accident happened shortly after 7 p.m., when a man was hit by a car as he crossed an avenue in Queens. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The second accident happened about a half hour later. An SUV hit a 50-year-old woman as she crossed at an intersection in Brooklyn. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

In both cases, the drivers remained at the scene.

Pedestrian accidents most often occur in intersections. Drivers may fail to obey traffic signals or fail to yield the right of way. Even at low speeds, these accidents can cause serious injuries to pedestrians. In other cases, severe injuries and deaths are possible. When a pedestrian accident results in a fatality, the effect on surviving family members can be severe and long lasting. An experienced attorney can help family members who have lost loved ones to obtain money damages through a personal injury claim against the negligent party.
