Brooklyn pedestrian struck, killed by hit and run driver

He was just 14 years old when he lost a brother to cystic fibrosis. Since then he has worked in his Brooklyn community to help raise money to fight the genetic disorder that affects so many. But now his good deeds in memory of his brother have been stopped forever by a hit and run driver.

The 32-year-old pedestrian was crossing Gerritsen Avenue when a white minivan swerved to the wrong side of the street and struck him. He died later at a nearby hospital.

Friends and family proudly recall his work to fight cystic fibrosis, as well as his work at a major financial services company and his unyielding support for the New York Yankees and hockey’s Rangers. “Everyone in the neighborhood loved him,” said a cousin. “We’re all his family.”

Police said the early Saturday morning pedestrian accident was near Everett Avenue, where the man had stopped at a neighborhood bar for a drink. He had a single drink, a server said, and said his goodbyes.

Law enforcement officials later found a minivan about a half-mile away. Its windshield bashed in and a headlight missing. Investigators tracked down the apparent driver, 50, at his Brooklyn home later that morning and filed criminal charges against him for leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

For the family that lost a loved one that morning, life will never be the same. In many similar situations, family depends not only on that person’s love, but also on their financial support. That means an accident like this can leave them heartbroken and at the same time, facing a financial crisis. They can, however, seek justice by pursuing compensation with the assistance of an attorney experienced in wrongful death litigation.
