New York City car accident kills 9-year-old girl

"She was a rambunctious 9-year-old," said the girl's mother. "She loved to dance, she wanted to be a pediatrician." All of the life and energy in that little girl came to an end this past Sunday as she left a New York City church with a friend and the friend's mom. The car they were in was slammed by a minivan driven by a man fleeing a hit-and-run accident.

Emergency workers at the scene of the Brooklyn car accident used the Jaws of Life to extricate the "completely lifeless and motionless" body of the girl from the wreckage. She was later declared dead at a nearby hospital.

The little girl’s 11-year-old friend suffered a broken pelvis in the crash. She and her mother were both listed in stable condition at a medical facility.

A 62-year-old Long Island man was driving the van that had reportedly sped away from the scene of a previous accident just minutes before the fatal crash. Police officers had pulled him over and asked him to get out of his van when he drove off.

Officers said they were not in pursuit of him at the time of the second crash, just two blocks away.

The father of the girl killed said, “I’m not angry at him. He took my daughter’s life and I’m hurting.” However, he added that he and his family will allow “justice to take its course.”

Many families in similar situations find that justice includes more than a criminal courtroom. They demand that the perpetrator be ordered by a court to compensate them financially for their loss as well. When they’re ready to talk, an experienced attorney will be ready to listen and help them seek justice.
