Pedestrians injured in New York City construction accident

New York City construction sites do not have the luxury of space. In a densely populated city, potentially dangerous construction sites are found in the midst of tenants, commuters, shoppers and other passersby. That's a major reason why safety protections are so important at New York construction sites.

A recent construction accident shows what can happen when construction sites are not properly set up. A metal and plywood shed collapsed, likely from a strong gust of wind, and crashed onto pedestrians in Midtown on a recent morning. The shed had been constructed to enclose work at a restaurant under renovation.

Witnesses told news reporters that they heard people screaming from under the debris, and saw people being pulled from the collapsed shed. Emergency workers treated injured people on the scene and took three people to the hospital. A firefighter was also hospitalized for minor injuries. There was no information on whether any construction workers on site were injured.

The city Department of Buildings warned property owners to secure construction sites that day due to high winds. Building inspectors were investigating the accident, and a news station reported a stop work order had been issued for the site of the collapsed shed. The station reported that the construction fence had not been installed according to approved plans.

Accidents like this pose a danger to construction workers on site as well as pedestrians and passersby. If you have been injured on a construction site, an attorney with experience in construction accidents can evaluate the accident for potential legal claims for money damages.
